I've been seeing a lot of CAT 349s and Komatsu PC490s on large earthmoving projects lately, and it got me wondering which machine operators prefer. For those who have run both, which one delivers better performance when moving serious amounts of material? How do they compare in terms of fuel efficiency, reliability, and maintenance costs? Does the CAT 349's reputation still give it the edge, or is the PC490 closing the gap? From what I've seen, the CAT 349 still has the edge in dealer support and resale value, but the PC490 is definitely no slouch when it comes to digging power and production. Honestly, I'd be happy climbing into either one if the goal is moving a mountain of dirt before quitting time
 
Well said. I think it really comes down to the support behind the machine. when uptime matters, a strong dealer network can be just as valuable as raw digging power.
 
Couldn't agree more. A great machine is only as good as the support that keeps it working when the job can't wait.
 
I agree. I'd also compare fuel burn and parts availability in your area..those two can make a bigger difference to long-term ownership costs than a slight edge in digging performance.
