In my opinion, both the CAT 349 and Komatsu PC490 are extremely powerful machines for large earthmoving projects. However, which one is better largely depends on the type of work, operator experience, and how well the machine is maintained.
One of the biggest advantages of the CAT 349 is its powerful hydraulic system, strong digging performance, and familiar, user-friendly controls for operators. It performs confidently when handling heavy excavation work. On the other hand, the Komatsu PC490 is also a very capable machine, and many operators consider it highly durable, especially for demanding jobs and long working hours.
When it comes to fuel efficiency, the results can vary depending on the specific model, type of work, and operator skill. Similarly, maintenance costs depend on local parts prices, service availability, and how well the machine is maintained.
From my perspective, the CAT 349 is still a very strong and reliable choice. However, the PC490 should definitely not be overlooked. It would be great to hear from anyone with hands-on experience operating both machines, especially regarding fuel consumption, cycle times, and maintenance experience.
