Why does my shuttle transmission engage so hard?

When I shift into forward or reverse, the machine moves immediately unless I hold the brakes, and the transmission engages pretty hard instead of smoothly. My idle is set at 1,000 RPM, which is within the manual's spec, but I'm planning to lower it to 900 RPM to see if it helps. Has anyone experienced this or found another cause?

check the transmission fluid level and condition first, then look into the clutch adjustment or shuttle pressure before lowering the idle, since a hard engagement can point to a few different issues.
