Hey everyone,

I’ve always wondered if why are skid steers called "skid steers"? Is it because of how they move, or is there some historical reason behind the name? Also, how does their steering compare to other types of loaders?

Would love to hear insights from those with experience using them!

Yep, it’s all in the name! Skid steers turn by skidding their wheels or tracks since they don’t have a traditional steering system. One side moves faster than the other, kind of like a tank, which lets them pivot in place. Super handy for tight spaces! Have you had a chance to operate one yet?

Yeah, that skidding action definitely takes some getting used to at first, but once you get the hang of it, they’re awesome for tight job sites. Curious if anyone here tried both wheeled and tracked versions? Wondering how much of a difference it makes in maneuverability.
