How much does it cost to rent a mini excavator?

I'm looking to rent a mini excavator for some general cleanup. I need to keep costs simple, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to price it.

Here's the deal: I think a 3-ton machine would be perfect for the job.

For general grading and clearing, is there any other attachment (like a grading bucket) you typically recommend that makes the job way faster?

I just checked a few suppliers recently, and here’s a quick look at what mini excavator rentals usually cost across the U.S.:

Size / Duration
Daily RateWeekly RateNotes
General mini excavator$150 – $350/day$600 – $1,400/weekSmaller units at the low end
8,000 lb class~$242/day~$728/week
3-4 ton class (Austin, TX)~$410-435/day~$1,000-1,165/weekMetro rates tend to be higher
New York, NY~$440/dayNAUrban pricing

Rates swing a lot depending on location and attachments, but a grading bucket is definitely worth it if you're doing leveling-it saves time and gives cleaner results

Around here, a 3-ton mini usually rents for about $250–$350 a day, depending on the area and how long you keep it. If you’re doing grading, a tilting or wide grading bucket saves a lot of time. You might also want a rake bucket if there’s debris mixed in.

Looks like a 3-ton mini runs about $250-$350/day in most areas-grab a grading or tilting bucket and you'll knock out the job way faster.

yeah that pricing looks about right-around $250-$350/day for a 3-ton is pretty standard. i'd definitely go with a grading or tilting bucket, makes cleanup way faster and saves you a ton of passes

That setup covers like 80-90% of general cleanup and light site prep work without overcomplicating things.

I've rented a few 3-ton mini excavators for cleanup and light grading jobs, and honestly, you're on the right track-that size is perfect for general site cleanup, trenching, and small grading work.

For attachments, the one that made the biggest difference for me was definitely a grading (ditch cleaning) bucket.

From experience:
  • A grading bucket makes leveling and smoothing way faster compared to a standard digging bucket
  • You can cover more ground in fewer passes, especially for final grading and cleanup
  • It's also easier to control when you're trying to get a clean finish
If your rental yard offers it, I'd 100% recommend getting one-it usually doesn't add much to the rental cost but saves a ton of time.
Another thing that helped me:
  • If you're dealing with brush or loose debris, a thumb attachment is a game-changer for grabbing and piling material
  • Even a manual thumb can speed things up a lot for land clearing and cleanup jobs
