How do you chose between a compact track loader and a skid steer for your job?

When pickin’ a machine i always ask, compact track loader or skid steer? Tracks are great on soft ground, but a skid steer’s better for tight space and costs less. How do y’all chose? Stick to one or does it depend on the job?

It depends on the job for me. If I'm dealing with soft ground, the tracks are a no-brainer. Otherwise, I'll lean toward a skid steer when I need to maneuver in tighter spaces or keep costs down.

Hwy everyone!

I’d add that maintenance plays a big role too, track loaders are great for traction, but those undercarriage repairs can get pricey. Anyone have a preference for specific brands when it comes to durability?

I usually opt for a compact track loader when working on soft or uneven terrain due to their superior traction and stability. However, for projects on hard surfaces or when budget constraints are a factor, a skid steer becomes the practical choice.

Good points all around! I usually go with a skid steer for jobs on pavement or in tight spots, but if there’s mud or rough terrain involved, a track loader is the way to go. That said, @DanMichaels2881 makes a solid point that undercarriage repairs on track loaders can get expensive fast. Anyone have tips on keeping those maintenance costs down?
