Do You Need a CDL to Drive a Dump Truck?

Hi,

I’m considering getting into dump truck driving and was wondering if you need a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) to operate one? Does it depend on the truck’s weight or the type of hauling being done?

Also, are there any exceptions or specific license classifications to be aware of? Any insights on requirements by state would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Hey! Yep, in most cases, you do need a CDL to drive a dump truck, but it depends on the truck’s weight. If it has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 lbs or more, you’ll need at least a Class B CDL. If you’re hauling a trailer over 10,000 lbs, then you’d need a Class A. Some smaller dump trucks might not require a CDL, but it really depends on the state and what you're hauling. Definitely check your local DMV for specifics. Good luck!

Yeah, most dump trucks need a CDL, but if it’s a smaller one under 26,001 lbs, you might be in the clear. If you’re hauling big loads or towing, Class A or B is usually required. Best bet is to check your state’s rules so there are no surprises! Planning to go full-time with it?

Great info so far! @Mr.PeterJ, are you planning to buy your own truck or looking to get hired somewhere? Some companies might help with CDL training if you’re just getting started. Also, if you’re only driving on private property, you might not even need one it depends on what you’re doing!
