Best entry point in construction right now? Looking at Operator vs Estimator Roles

Hey guys, Ive been looking into construction jobs and trying to figure out the best path to start with. I'm torn between going into heavy equioment operation or trying out an estimator role. I like the idea of hands-on work, but the long-term growth in office roles also looks appealing. For those already in the field, which one worked out better for you? Just trying to make a smart move early. Any advice would help.

If you're choosing between a heavy equipment operator and a construction estimator, it really comes down to your long-term goals.

Heavy Equipment Operator: Best for those who enjoy hands-on work, being outdoors, and earning quickly. High demand, solid pay, but physically demanding with slower career progression.
Construction Estimator: Ideal if you prefer office-based work, planning, and numbers. Strong long-term growth, higher salary ceiling, and opportunities to move into project management.

Start as an operator to gain real field experience, then transition into estimating later. Many successful estimators have on-site experience-it gives you a huge advantage.

Want action + fast entry? Go operator.
Want long-term growth + higher ceiling? Go estimator.

Hope this helps you.

I started as a heavy equipment operator and don’t regret it at all. You learn real skills fast, and there’s always demand for good operators. Plus, you’re not stuck behind a desk all day. A lot of guys burn out in office roles, but operating keeps things interesting. You can always move up to foreman or superintendent later if you want more responsibility.

I’d probably lean toward starting as an operator just to get real field experience first, then move into estimating later if it interests you. That hands-on knowledge seems to give you a big edge in office roles down the line. Anyone here actually made that switch and found it worth it?
