Any diagnostic tips for a slow boom speed?

Hi, I’m working on a 2000 JD 544H unit and running into slow boom speed..everything else like driving, steering, and bucket tilt works fine, and pilot pressure checks out; I even resealed both boom cylinders thinking it was leaking seals but no change, so any diag tips would be appreciated!
 
I ran into almost the same issue on a John Deere 544H wheel loader a while back- the boom was slow, but everything else felt normal, just like you're describing.

In my case, it wasn't the cylinders either. Turned out to be the boom section in the main control valve, starting to bypass internally. Pilot pressure looked fine, but the spool wasn't flowing as it should under load.
 
Slow boom speed can come from a few common issues. First, check the hydraulic oil level and condition—low or dirty oil can make everything slow. Then look at the filters, if they are clogged it will restrict flow. Also inspect hoses for leaks or damage. Sometimes the problem is with the control valve or a weak hydraulic pump. Cold weather can slow things too until the oil warms up. Start with basic checks before going deeper.
 
I've seen this kind of issue before where everything else checks out but the boom stays slow. If the cylinders and pilot pressure are good, I'd start looking at the main control valve or possible restriction in the lines. Had one do something similar and it ended up being a valve issue starting to wear out. Might also be worth checking flow from the pump just to rule that out. These kinds of problems can be a pain to track down, but sounds like you're on the right path.

  • Load check/relief valve: could be stuck open, causing bypass
  • Flow issue: good pressure doesn't always mean good flow
  • Filters/suction screen: partial restriction can slow the boom first
In my case, it ended up being internal leakage in the boom valve section. Please test pressure/flow at the boom ports to confirm whether it's valve vs pump.

Is it slow both up and down or just one direction?

Good call on the valve check. . that “good pressure but weak flow” line hits hard. I’d definitely follow that and test flow at the boom ports next, feels like you’re zeroing in on it.
 
Since pilot pressure is good and both cylinders were resealed with no change, it really sounds more like a flow/control issue than the cylinders themselves.
