Why did the winch on my Caterpillar D6C suddenly stop working and start free-spooling after it was pulling fine earlier?

Hey guys, having an issue with my Caterpillar D6C winch. It worked fine at first, then only at high speed, and now it won't pull at all. The drum just free-spools like the brake isn't holding. I've checked oil level, flow, lines, and the screen filter-everything seems okay, but pressure might be low. Has anyone dealt with this before? Not sure if it's a brake issue, pump problem, or something internal. Appreciate any help

Check your control valve before tearing into the winch. If the spool isn’t fully shifting or is sticking, it can prevent proper engagement. I’ve seen debris in the valve body cause exactly what you’re describing. Easy thing to rule out before going deeper.

On a Caterpillar D6C, when a winch suddenly goes into free-spool like that, it's usually something simple giving up all at once.

Most common causes:

* **Brake issue** - not holding the drum anymore
* **Clutch slipped or disengaged**
* **Linkage stuck/misaligned**
* **Something internal broke**

I'd start with the **brake check first**-that's usually the culprit
