Who was actually responsible for excavating Ur of the Chaldees?

I've been reading a bit about ancient sites and got curious about Ur of the Chaldees. Does anyone know who led the main excavation there and what kind of methods they used back then? Obviously no modern excavators, but I'm interested in how large-scale digging was organized and how those early excavations compare to what we'd consider proper earthmoving or site work today.

Any historians or archaeology folks here who can break it down?

The main digs at Ur were actually run by Sir Leonard Woolley in the 1920s–30s, working with the British Museum and the University of Pennsylvania, see Woolley’s Excavations at Ur, 1934 for reference
