What’s the easiest way to remove the Allison transmission?

On most 1966 Ford payloaders with an Allison transmission, the easiest way to remove it is from the top, especially if the engine is already out. This gives better access and lifting space.

Basic steps:

Disconnect the batteries and drain the transmission oil.
  • Remove floor plates, access panels, and the seat assembly if they block access.
  • Disconnect linkages, cooler lines, wiring, and the driveshaft (mark their positions for easier reassembly).
  • Support the transmission with a hoist or transmission jack - it's very heavy.
  • Unbolt the mounts and bellhousing, then carefully lift the transmission straight up and out.
