What should I know about owning a Caterpillar 966A, including common issues, parts availability, and year of manufacture?

Recently picked up a Caterpillar 966A, and I'm trying to learn as much as I can before putting it to work. Plan is to use it for light-duty stuff like clearing brush, leveling, and some snow work, not heavy production. I've read a few things about steering axle parts being hard to find, but I'm curious what real owners have experienced.
Looking for some insight:

• What are the common problems with these older 966A loaders?
• How is parts availability these days (OEM vs aftermarket)?
• Any tips for keeping them reliable long-term?
• Also, is there a good way to confirm the year of manufacture from the serial number?

The machine looks to be in good shape, but I know with older iron, there's always something to watch out for
