What factors do you consider when buying a new dozer?

Thinking about getting a new dozer soon and curious what you guys usually look at before pulling the trigger.

For me, the big ones are machine size vs job needs, fuel efficiency, undercarriage durability, and how easy it is to get parts and service support in my area. Cab comfort and controls also matter if you're running long shifts. Of course, resale value and brand reliability play a big role too.

Some say newer tech like grade control, telematics, and operator assist features are worth the extra cost, others prefer simpler machines that are easier to maintain.

Do you prefer new or slightly used low-hour machines?tra cost - others prefer simpler machines that are easier to maintain.

Terrain and job type come first for me. If you’re pushing on soft ground or doing finish work, a smaller or hydrostatic machine might make more sense. If you’re doing heavy pushing or ripping rock, you need the weight and horsepower.

Also pay attention to the undercarriage setup (standard vs heavy duty). Rocky ground will eat tracks fast if the machine isn’t built for it.

Personally I’m not against tech like grade control or GPS. If you do a lot of finish grading it can save time and reduce rework.

Great points. Matching machine size to the job and having strong dealer support are huge factors. Personally, I like slightly used low-hour machines-better value while still reliable.

Undercarriage condition, maintenance history, and parts availability are big ones for me. I also don't mind slightly used low-hour machines if the price is right. Sometimes you can find good inspected equipment on marketplaces like IronPlanet or Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers.

Good points. I usually lean toward slightly used, low-hour machines—most of the early depreciation is already gone, but you still get a lot of life out of it. Service support and parts availability are huge for me too. New tech is nice, but I’d only pay extra if it actually helps productivity on the type of jobs you run.
