I’m looking into skid steers and noticed they come in a variety of sizes. What are the main size categories, and how do they differ in terms of capabilities? Are there specific advantages to choosing a compact model over a larger one for certain jobs?

Would love to hear from those with experience and what size do you prefer for your work, and why?

Good question! Skid steers generally come in three sizes—small, medium, and large. The compact ones are great for tight spaces and lighter work like landscaping, while the larger models have more power for heavy-duty tasks like excavation or lifting heavier loads. I personally like mid-sized ones since they offer a good balance of power and maneuverability. What kind of work are you planning to use one for?

Totally agree with going mid-size for versatility! I’ve used compact ones for backyard projects and tight indoor jobs, but you really notice the power difference with bigger models. Curious, has anyone tried switching between wheel and track versions depending on the job?
