Hey everyone,

I’ve been thinking about whether to go union or non-union for my next construction job. I keep hearing mixed opinions about which pays better and offers more benefits. Does anyone have firsthand experience with both? How do the wages really compare, and are there other perks or downsides I should consider? Would love to hear what’s worked best for you!

Union jobs usually come with higher base pay, solid health coverage, and pension plans, especially in cities with strong labor presence. According to recent BLS data, union construction workers earn about 20–30% more on average than their non-union counterparts. But yeah, non-union gigs can offer more freedom, faster hiring, and sometimes less red tape on the job. It really depends on your priorities, want long-term stability and benefits? Go union. Want flexibility or to move up fast based on hustle alone? Non-union might suit you better.

I’ve been on both sides too, union definitely had better pay and benefits for me, but non-union gave me more freedom to pick up work faster. It really comes down to what matters more to you: steady long-term perks or short-term flexibility.

Totally agree with what’s been said, union’s great for steady pay and benefits, but non-union can move quicker and be less restrictive. Curious, has anyone made the switch mid-career and felt a big difference in job satisfaction?
