Pricing a stump grinding job and collaborating with tree companies.

Hi everyone, I've recently started a stump grinding business and I'm seeking advice on how to price my services. Should I charge by the inch or by the job, and what are the typical rates? Additionally, I'd like to establish partnerships with tree companies that don't offer stump grinding. How do these arrangements usually work? Do they include the stump grinding cost in their quotes and then pay me my rate, or do they refer customers directly to me? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey LoggerMike, I’ve seen stump grinding priced both by the inch and per job, but charging by the inch tends to be more common, especially for smaller jobs. As for collaborating with tree companies, a lot of times they’ll refer customers to you and pay you directly, but some may include the stump grinding in their quotes and then deduct your rate. It’s worth discussing upfront to set clear expectations on how payments will be handled! :)

Good advice! Pricing by the inch keeps things straightforward, but some jobs just make more sense with a flat rate. Partnering with tree companies can be a great move, just make sure you’re clear on payment terms so there’s no confusion later.

Pricing by the inch seems to be the standard, but for bigger jobs, a flat rate might work better. Partnering with tree companies sounds like a smart move. Do most of them expect a commission, or is it usually just a straight referral?

Hey LoggerMike, I’ve had good experiences charging by the inch, especially for smaller stumps. It’s definitely more predictable for both you and the customer. When working with tree companies, it’s usually a referral system where they just send clients your way and pay you directly, but some might work the cost into their quotes. Just be sure to get the payment terms clear from the start so there’s no confusion down the road!

You’re on the right track. Charging by the inch is clean and easy to explain, and most tree companies I’ve worked with either refer directly or fold your cost into their quote, just depends on the relationship.
