Is It Worth Renting a Compactor or Should I Buy One?

Hey all,

I’m weighing whether to rent or buy a compactor for some upcoming projects. It’s not something I’ll use every day, but I want to make sure I’m not throwing money away on rentals either. Has anyone been in the same boat? What made you decide one way or the other?

If you're only using it occasionally, renting can save you from tying up capital, but keep in mind that frequent rentals add up fast-industry averages put weekly compactor rentals at $200-$500. If you rent more than 8-10 weeks a year, you're basically paying the cost of owning. Plus, ownership gives you resale value and eliminates downtime waiting for availability.

Yeah, I’ve been there. If it’s not something you’ll use regularly, renting usually makes more sense at first, no maintenance, storage, or tying up cash. But if you start needing it on multiple jobs or keeping it longer than planned, those rental bills add up fast.

What helped me decide was looking at how many days per month I’d realistically use it, plus transport and downtime costs. If you’re close to using it often enough to cover payments, buying (even used) can be the better move. Otherwise, renting keeps things flexible.
