How Wide Are Forklifts?

Hey!
I'm trying to figure out the typical width of forklifts for different applications. How wide are standard warehouse forklifts compared to rough terrain or narrow aisle models?

If anyone has experience with different forklift sizes, I’d love to know the average width ranges and what to consider when working in tight spaces!

Hey @Clark Boyle! Standard warehouse forklifts are usually around 3 to 4 feet wide, while narrow aisle models can be as slim as 3 feet or less. Rough terrain forklifts, on the other hand, tend to be much wider—often 5 feet or more—for stability on uneven ground. If you're working in tight spaces, definitely check the turning radius too! Are you trying to fit one into a specific area?

I’ve spent plenty of time on the seat of everything from a reach truck to a fat-tire outdoor lift. When you're trying to figure out if you can make a tight squeeze, you can't just measure the distance between the tires. You have to think about the counterweight swing. Always size up the space by measuring the entire machine, from the tip of the forks to the furthest point of the counterweight. That swing area is what wipes out shelves, knocks over stacks, or pins a pedestrian against a wall. It’s the last thing people remember until it’s too late.

Standard warehouse forklifts are usually around 3 to 4 feet wide. Narrow aisle forklifts are slimmer, often 2.5 to 3 feet, so they can move easily in tight racks. Rough terrain forklifts are much wider, around 5 to 7 feet, built for stability on uneven ground. When working in tight spaces, always check your aisle width and turning radius that matters more than just the forklift’s width.
