I’ve worked alongside a few heavy equipment transport companies over the years, and from what I’ve seen, it can be a solid career if you enjoy both trucking and heavy machinery. One driver I knew started out hauling general freight, then moved into equipment transport after getting experience with lowboy trailers and oversized loads. He said no two days were really the same. One day he was moving excavators between job sites, the next he was hauling a dozer across the state.
The work seemed pretty steady, especially in areas with lots of construction, road work, or mining activity. The biggest learning curve was load securement, route planning, and dealing with permits for oversized equipment. If you're already comfortable around trucks and heavy iron, you're already ahead of the game. It definitely takes patience, but most guys I know enjoy the variety and better pay compared to standard freight hauling.
