Estimate for Cost of Large Oak Tree Removal?

Hey everyone, I'm looking to get a ballpark estimate for removing a large oak tree from my property in central Pennsylvania. The tree is about 80 feet tall with a wide canopy and sits roughly 20 feet from my house, partially overhanging the roof. A local tree service said a crane might be necessary due to the size and position, but I wanted to get some input before moving forward.

I’d like to know what kind of price range I should expect for the removal. Also, does it typically cost extra to have the wood chipped and hauled away versus keeping it for firewood? I’m not too concerned about stump removal at this point—just need the tree gone before the next big storm rolls through.

Appreciate any insight you all can provide! Thanks!

Hey @Jake johnson! That’s a big tree, especially being that close to your house. Around central PA, I’d guess you’re looking at $2,500 to $5,500, maybe more if a crane is needed. A lot depends on the company, how tricky the job is, and if they have to bring in extra equipment.

Most places charge extra for hauling and chipping, but if you want to keep the wood for firewood, that could save you a bit. Some companies might even knock off a little if they can sell the logs. The best bet is to get a few quotes and see what works best for you.

Sounds like quite a job with that tree! Definitely get a few quotes to compare, and if you're keeping the wood for firewood, that could definitely help lower the cost a bit. The crane might add to the price, but better safe than sorry if it's that close to your house!

It's 80ft high and only 20ft from your house? Sir, you are living in a death trap. Or you're exaggerating.

No idea on pricing up there. But since DJ started talking about kicking people out the price I used to be able to find in Texas has gone way up.

If what you say is true, I'd make sure you got a crane involved. One false move from 50ft plus and you'll need a new roof. Not great with the way home insurance prices are trending. Make sure the service is bonded and insured.

If it's 80ft and tall you might be able to get slabs out of it and sell it to those trendy online table makers. The size tree you're describing should produce some good sized boards.

Yeah, if a crane’s involved, you’re probably looking at the higher end of estimates, but definitely worth it for safety. Also, @winston_wisdom has a point it might be worth seeing if a sawmill or woodworker would buy the logs instead of just chipping them!

Definitely agree with @Geoffrey_groundbreaker about if a crane's involved, it can get pricey, but safety's key with a tree that size so close to your house. Also, checking with local woodworkers or sawmills might help offset the cost if you’re open to selling the wood!
