I've been seeing a lot of CAT 349s and Komatsu PC490s on large earthmoving projects lately, and it got me wondering which machine operators prefer. For those who have run both, which one delivers better performance when moving serious amounts of material? How do they compare in terms of fuel efficiency, reliability, and maintenance costs? Does the CAT 349's reputation still give it the edge, or is the PC490 closing the gap? I'd love to hear some real-world experiences from contractors and operators who have spent time in both machines.Screenshot 2026-06-20 232243.webp

From what I've seen, the CAT 349 still has the edge in dealer support and resale value, but the PC490 is definitely no slouch when it comes to digging power and production. Honestly, I'd be happy climbing into either one if the goal is moving a mountain of dirt before quitting time
