Can someone explain in simple terms what a final drive does on a trailer (if trailers even use one), and how it fits into the whole drivetrain? I'm

I am mostly familiar with final drives on excavators, so I'm trying to wrap my head around the difference.

Appreciate any insight.

Trailers don't use final drives at all, those are on powered machines. Trailers just free-roll, while the final drive on equipment is the last gear reduction that turns engine power into wheel or track movement.

The only time you might hear something similar is on specially powered trailers or self-propelled units, but that's not common.

So in simple terms:

• Final drive = last gear reduction that delivers power to the wheels.
• Most trailers = no power = no final drive.
