Hey everyone,

I’ve been operating a backhoe for a while now, but I’m always looking to improve my skills and efficiency on the job. I figured this would be a great place for operators of all experience levels to share tips, tricks, and best practices when working with a backhoe.

Some questions to kick things off:

  • What’s your go-to method for digging a perfect trench?
  • Any maintenance routines you swear by to keep your machine running smoothly?
  • Have you found any underrated attachments that make a big difference?
  • What’s the biggest mistake you see new operators making?
Let’s share some knowledge and help each other out. Looking forward to your insights!

Hey @Dozerbuddy! One thing that’s helped me with trenching is keeping a consistent bucket angle and not rushing the cut, it makes cleanup way easier. Also, I always check the pins and bushings before starting the day; a little grease goes a long way in preventing wear. What’s everyone’s take on using tilt buckets for grading? Worth it or just extra weight?

Good stuff! I’d say tilt buckets are definitely worth it if you’re doing a lot of grading, way more control and less time spent repositioning. Also, keeping your stabilizers properly set makes a huge difference in keeping everything smooth and balanced, especially on uneven ground!

Hey @Dozerbuddy, love this thread! One trick I swear by is marking out the trench path with spray paint before digging—it really helps keep everything straight and clean. Also, keeping the RPMs steady instead of constantly revving saves fuel and makes for smoother controls. And yeah, regular greasing is a must—skip it and you’ll feel it fast. Anyone else here a fan of thumb attachments for tricky lifts?
