Anyone dealt with a 1988 CAT D4H that has a weak 2nd gear and no 3rd gear?

Transmission fluid level is good and it still pushes strong in 1st, but 2nd barely moves and 3rd does nothing. Any simple things I should check before digging into the transmission?
