Best Machines to Buy on IronPlanet for a Small Construction Business

I've been checking out listings on IronPlanet and trying to figure out the best machines to start with for a small construction business.

From what I see, a lot of people suggest starting with:
  • Mini excavator
  • Skid steer
  • Backhoe loader
But I'm not sure what actually makes the most sense in real-world use. If you had a limited budget, would you go for one versatile machine or two smaller ones to cover more jobs?

Also curious:
  • What machine paid itself off the fastest for you?
  • Any equipment you regret buying from IronPlanet?
  • Are the inspection reports reliable enough to trust?

Just trying to learn before I make a move. Appreciate any advice.

Machine recommendations would depend entirely on the top of work you plan to do. General landscaping verse pool, grading, etc and the type of environment (large lots/ranches vs tight residential) I'd recommend a different machine.

Whatever you buy on IP, I'd recommend a unit with a full inspection and their IronClad coverage. Remember, the coverage means it'll match the inspection, so make sure every component is rated well. I've seen guys assume Ironclad means it's fully functional, but it means they stand by their inspection. Buddy saw a great price and coverage and thought he was getting a good deal - it was priced low because they called out a couple issues and worn treads. Totally my buddy's fault. After the repairs he probably came out even, just was a bit of a delay getting it on a jobsite.

I've been in that exact spot before, and you're asking the right questions.

If your budget is tight, I'd go with one solid, versatile machine first instead of spreading it across two. A skid steer is usually the safest bet-it can handle a lot of different jobs (grading, loading, cleanup, light digging), especially if you add attachments. That's usually what pays off the fastest because you can keep it busy almost every day.
