How to dig a square hole with an excavator?

Interesting question! I think it really depends on the size of the excavator and the precision needed. Using guide markers or a laser level might help make the edges more square

It's doable, just takes patience...most guys rough it out with the bucket, use markers or a laser, then clean up the corners by hand or with a smaller attachment.
 
A good operator can get it pretty darn square, especially with a grading bucket or a bit of hand cleanup at the end.
