Hey folks, I occasionally haul oversized equipment on a flatbed, and dealing with wide load permits can sometimes be more challenging than the haul itself. How do you handle permits, route planning, and escort requirements in your area, and do you have any tips for making the process smoother?

I usually try to get the permits lined up a few days early and double-check the route myself, nothing ruins a haul faster than finding a low bridge or unexpected restriction halfway there.

In my experience, the key is to start the permit process as early as possible. Every state has different width, height, and weight thresholds, and some take much longer to approve permits than others. I always verify the dimensions of the load myself before applying because even a few inches can change the permit requirements. For route planning, I use truck-specific GPS and double-check for low bridges, construction zones, and restricted roads. If escorts are required, I schedule them as soon as I have permit approval to avoid delays.
