What's the best approach for removing built-up silt and debris without damaging the dam structure?

I'm looking into cleaning out a small dam using an excavator and wanted to get some real-world advice. Are there certain bucket types or techniques that work better for this kind of job? Also curious about any common mistakes to avoid, especially when working near water.

usually a mix of controlled dredging and gradual drawdown works best-remove material in stages,a void heavy equipment near the face, and keep a close eye on erosion and structural stress. slow and steady protects the dam.

Best approach is to use controlled dredging with long-reach excavators or suction dredges, working in shallow layers. Avoid aggressive digging, keep equipment off the dam face, and monitor for erosion or vibration to protect the structure.
