What is the safety checklist for a mini excavator?

I know the basics: check the oil, make sure the tracks are good. But I'm terrified of breaking something, or worse, hurting myself or someone else. These machines are small, but they can still do damage, especially if you hit a gas line or the hydraulics fail. My friend told me I need a "pre-shift checklist," but I don't know what that includes.
