What could cause coolant to enter the sump on a John Deere 862?

My John Deere 862 is intermittently losing coolant into the sump, blowing steam from the crankcase breather, and occasionally hydraulic-locking on startup. Could a liner seal, cracked liner, or head gasket be the cause? I also can't locate the engine serial number.
