Stihl 009 - What Was Their Strategy?

Picked up this nice little 009 at a yard sale and went through it. Solid build with a magnesium case and removable cylinder. Not really designed to be a climbing saw, but definitely overbuilt for the average backyard user. I find it odd that it doesn't have anti-vibe features.

What market was Stihl targeting with this series? Does anyone here share some thoughts?

In its day, it was a stout little saw. It's a reed valve design, so the RPMs are limited compared to modern saws, but it still had a fair bit of grunt for its size. We still have a rural electric co-op that buys every clean 009 we get in as they prefer them for their bucket saws. They never wanted to spend the extra $$$ on the 200T, so it serves as a solid alternative to the 192T.

That’s interesting! The 009 definitely seems like it was built to last. Maybe Stihl was aiming for a tough, no-frills homeowner saw that could still handle some serious work. It’s cool to hear that some co-ops still prefer them, just goes to show how well-built they were! Have you had a chance to put yours to work yet?

Yeah, it’s pretty wild how tough these older Stihl saws were built! Feels like they were made to last forever. Have you noticed any quirks or downsides while using it? Curious how it compares to some of the newer homeowner saws.

Yeah, the 009 really seems like a beast compared to today’s homeowner saws! It’s interesting how Stihl made it so durable but kept it simple. Have you noticed any performance differences when using it versus newer models?

Always thought the 009 was kind of a sleeper, it built like a tank and surprisingly capable for what it is. Stihl definitely overbuilt it for backyard use!
