Hey all, I’m trying to decide whether to trade in my heavy equipment or sell it privately. What are the pros and cons you’ve experienced with each option? Any tips on how to get the best value without too much hassle?

Great question! I’ve gone both routes, and each has its trade-offs. Trading in is definitely quicker and less of a headache and dealers usually handle the paperwork and you can roll the value into your next purchase. But, you’ll almost always get less than what you’d make in a private sale. On the flip side, selling privately can net you 10–30% more, especially if your machine’s in good shape and you list it on platforms like MachineryTrader or Facebook Marketplace. Just be ready for tire-kickers and lowball offers. One thing that really helps either way, keep maintenance records and recent service receipts handy. It boosts buyer confidence big time. hope this helps :)

Appreciate the breakdown, have you ever had luck getting close to dealer trade-in offers from serious private buyers, or is the gap usually pretty wide?

curious about this too seems like private sales get you more, but the hassle kinda scares me. Anyone ever regret not just trading in?

$$ difference is mentioned above. But if you're trading in to trade up, that might be the way to go. Really depends on the market and your regional. OEM dealers have targets they need to hit so might help you quite a bit on a new unit if they need to hit numbers.

The trade in value vs private sale numbers ain't apples to apples if they're also giving you a chunk off the new unit purchase.

ive wondered the same...private sale sounds tempting for the extra cash, but I’m not sure it’s worth chasing every buyer and dodging the tire-kickers. Anyone here ever try both and have a strong preference?
