How deep a hole can a mini excavator dig?

When you're running a common 3-to-4-ton mini-ex, at what point do you decide to max out its reach (usually around 8 to 10 feet), or do you immediately call for a larger 5-ton or 8-ton machine, even if the depth is technically just within the mini's spec?

What's the real-world depth limit where efficiency and safety drop off a cliff for a typical mini excavator?

In real-world use, once you’re digging near the max reach (around 8–9 ft) on a 3–4 ton mini, efficiency and stability start to drop fast. If you’re constantly working at full arm extension or need deeper, wider trenches, it’s smarter and safer to step up to a 5–8 ton machine.
