A lot of people think the pre-fab metal buildings are cheaper than buying your own steel and making your own. Figured I'd run some numbers on a simple kit to see for ourselves.
This kit starts at $2400.
Dimensions: 18’-2″ W X 18’ D X 8’ H (7’ Clearance)

The material list is provided:

Most of the material list is hardware.
4x4 x 11ga square tube are $204.78 for 20 feet at steelsupplylp.com. So for 4 @ 8ft, 2 sticks are needed, $400.
12" x 3.5" - 14 Gauge Cee Purlin are $142 for 18.5 feet from steeldash.com. So 2 of those for $300.
Painted Galvalume (24-gauge) is about $1.75 to $2.35 per square foot from sheffieldmetals.com, so 18x18 @ $2.35 per sq ft = $761
To get all these materials from 1 place, it would require some flexibility on dimensions but for the sake of this comparison, I kept everything similar.
This totals about $1461. Add in the trim and hardware, and you'll probably be close to $2000.
So in this case, buying a kit is only about 20% extra compared to buying separately. This includes waste.
